The deep reef exploration and monitoring (dream) project's primary aim is to obtain scientific data to support the study of deep reef ecosystems in UK waters. It is among the few research projects in the world utilizing technical diving techniques, mixed gas and closed circuit rebreather (CCR) technology to obtain hands-on scientific data as deep as 160 meters. Primary data, including high definition video, is made available for academic purposes to enhance the development of research goals and priorities for deep reef ecosystems in UK waters.
The depths studied lie in a range referred to as the twilight zone. This is a transitional area of the ocean below the sunlit and above the total darkness of the abyssal depths. In coastal areas it lies between 60 and 150 meters due to lower water clarity. Historically, the physiological limitations of air diving have prevented researchers from detailed exploration of this ecologically significant zone. Advances in technology have now opened up this relatively unexplored zone. Deeper regions of the undersea world have been explored with submersibles and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) but due to high costs and limited availability they have concentrated on the abyssal depths and the ocean floor. As such, more is probably known about these zones than the twilight zone. When submersibles have been used in the twilight zone they are limited compared to the hands-on approach of the SCUBA diver. We take a multi-disciplinary team approach and would like to talk with divers who may be interested in working with us. As the majority of diving is conducted down a slope there are requirement for experienced divers of all levels to include survey work, filming, shallow and deep water support. A secondary aim of the project is to train more divers in technical diving techniques to increase the number available to participate in subsequent exploration. The project is also seeking contact with sponsors and organsiations that would be interested in co-operating with us. Sean McTierney, Project Director |
